Research from the Department of Energy shows that single retired people will be spending £1 in every £10 on gas and electricity bills by 2020.
They will be the worst off social group in terms of the proportion they spend on their energy bills.
Officials argue this group, made up of around 3.3 million women and 1.2 million men, has the biggest potential to reduce their gas and electricity bills by taking up the Government's offer of new green schemes.
They could potentially save up to £282 if they opt for help to get more insulation, new boilers or renewable energy. An official document claims single pensioners could therefore on average get the most help from the Government.
